Department Philosophy

The social studies curriculum is designed to teach students how to become responsible citizens of our country and members of a global community. This responsibility is built upon a foundation of knowledge of both their environment as well as that of others, interacting within an ever-changing society. Students learn fundamentals that will enable them to enter a complex society with a sense of wonder, a desire to explore, and an ability to make decisions.

Students are given an opportunity to learn about the past so that they can better approach the future. An appreciation of the American heritage is developed along with an understanding of the traditions of the American way of life. It is important that each student gain an appreciation of the differences that exist among people while at the same time appreciating the interdependence that we all have with one another.

It is the philosophy of our curriculum that students pursue their study of the social studies within an activity-based program. Toward this end, the curriculum is designed to stimulate a thirst for knowledge and understanding that will expand students' horizons throughout their education opportunities in the Manalapan-Englishtown Schools. We feel that students learn best when they participate in active learning experiences.
